What do you know about Brazil?

Brazil is an amazing collection of organized diversity and one of the most significant and important countries on the face of the planet.

The Portuguese navigator Pedro Alvares Cabral arrived here in 1500, and claimed this land for Portugal. Three centuries later (in 1822) Brazil proudly proclaimed its independence, and has never looked back.

It's a huge country with a land mass that covers nearly half of South America. Much of the population lives in the Heartland, along the southern and southeastern coastal areas.

Brazil is famous for its beaches, coffee, the Amazon River and rainforest, Carnival in Rio, and the country's passion for samba, soccer....and so much more.

Flag of Brazil
Brazil's flag is a deep green banner with a yellow diamond enclosing a night-blue, star-studded Southern Hemisphere sky. The sky depicts 27 white, five-pointed stars (one for each state and the Federal District); the stars are arranged in the pattern of the night sky over Rio de Janeiro on November 15, 1889 (this is the date when the last Emperor of Brazil, Dom Pedro II, was deposed, and the republic was proclaimed). The stars in view include the constellations Southern Cross (also called Crux), Scorpius, Canis Major and others. A banner across the sky reads, "ORDEM E PROGRESSO," which means "order and progress" in Portuguese.

Map of Brazil

Brazil has 26 states and one federal district. The overall land mass is larger than continental United States. Brazil's population is approximately 186,112,794. The official name of the country is Federative Republic of Brazil.
